Sheep Farmer Course.

Sheep course tutors: Sheep farming vets and sheep experts, Janet Horsfield BVSc CertCHP DBR MRCVS and Laura Parkinson BVSc MRCVS.

Lanes Farm Vets’ series of sheep farmer courses are led by our own sheep farming vets and sheep experts, Janet Horsfield and Laura Parkinson. Our ‘Learn how to better keep sheep courses’ are delivered as practical individual courses across the shepherd’s year; with plenty of time for hands-on learning, helping you take new ideas from each course back to your flock, whether yours is a long-established or a new flock, large or small. £50 per module or £150 for the complete annual course (4 modules).

Lanes Farm Vets’ vet-led sheep farming course includes:

Sheep course module 1 (COMPLETED) – Monday 23rd January 2023 12noon – 2pm: Lambing and newborn lamb care. Including: preparing your flock for lambing, lambing kits, hygiene in and around sheep pens, colostrum intake in lambs, increasing lamb survival rates – common lambing problems. This is a practical module, held at our emergency lambing facility, so you can see what help is on hand if you ever need it. Sheep course module 2 (COMPLETED) – The growing lamb. Could your flock worming strategy be reducing lamb growth rates and costing you money? How to know! Sustainable control strategies for sheep parasites – devise your customised calendar plan, managing lambs for lamb survival and growth. This is a practical course, held at our Brock facility, so you can see and know how you can get same-day sheep WEC results using our in-house lab, a key part of any successful sheep worming plan. Sheep course module 3: Weaning to tupping! Practicals including: Pre-tupping flock care, when and how to wean, ram care and ram MOTs (practical), using teaser rams for a tighter lambing block. This is a practical course, held on one of three working sheep farms so you can see different sheep farming systems in action. Sheep course module 4 – Care and feeding of your in-lamb ewes. To include: body condition scoring ewes (practical), feeding ewes – economics, colostrum and lamb survival, metabolic conditions – avoiding and treating. This is a practical course, held on one of three working sheep farms so you can see different sheep farming systems in action.
